From Aviation Pioneer to UAS Innovator: How Tulsa Is Shaping the Future of Flight

As the aviation industry evolves, Tulsa is building on more than a century of expertise while embracing new opportunities in autonomous flight, advanced air mobility and aerospace technology.

Oklahoma's aviation story began more than a century ago. Early pioneers like Charles F. Willard and Clyde Cessna helped introduce powered flight to the state in the early 1900s, laying the foundation for what would become one of the nation's most important aviation and aerospace hubs.

As aviation gained momentum during World War I, Oklahoma emerged as an important center for pilot training and aircraft development. Fort Sill earned recognition as the birthplace of Army combat aviation, where pilots received some of the military's earliest training in navigation, aerial observation and reconnaissance. Growth continued through the achievements of Oklahoma trailblazers such as Thomas Cox Allen and James Herman Banning, the first African American pilots to complete a transcontinental flight, and Wiley Post, whose record-setting solo flight around the world captured international attention and demonstrated the incredible potential of air travel.

Fueled by the region's booming oil economy, Tulsa Municipal Airport grew into one of the world's busiest airports during the early 1930s, thanks to the oil boom that dubbed Tulsa as the Oil Capital of the World. This momentum continued through World War II, when aerospace manufacturing expanded significantly across Oklahoma. In the decades that followed, Tulsa strengthened its reputation as a center for aircraft maintenance and engineering, building expertise that continues to attract industry leaders today.  

Today, aviation and aerospace is Oklahoma’s second largest industry. The state is home to the world’s largest military aircraft repair facility at Tinker Air Force Base, as well as the world’s largest commercial airline maintenance base, the American Airlines Maintenance Base right here in Tulsa. Oklahoma is #1 in the nation for the number of high schools that teach aerospace and aviation in the classroom, nearly double the number of any other state. 

Much like Tulsa's energy sector, the future of aviation is being shaped by a combination of established industry leaders and emerging innovators. Tulsa Innovation Labs and our regional partners are helping accelerate growth in advanced air mobility, autonomous systems and drone technology through workforce development programs, industry partnerships and entrepreneurial support.

At the center of this momentum is Skyway Range, an advanced testing environment that provides companies space to test autonomous aircraft across both urban and rural environments, helping advance the safety, reliability and scalability of unmanned aerial systems. Skyway is also home to WindShape, a 19,000 sq. ft. indoor testing facility that simulates extreme weather conditions. 

Tulsa is also demonstrating how these innovations can create real-world impact. Drone technology is already supporting public safety efforts across the region, helping first responders locate missing individuals, assess emergencies and improve response times. International companies are taking notice, selecting Tulsa as a proving ground for next-generation drone systems and autonomous flight applications.
